THIRTY-TWO

Connor dialled his brother’s number, holding it to his ear and waiting for him to pick up for what seemed like the hundredth time. Again, it rang out to voicemail and he threw it down onto his wide grey settee in anger.

‘Shit,’ he cried. ‘Shit, shit, shit!’

He sat down on the armchair that matched the settee and leaned forward, running his hands through his hair as he tried to think of any reason why Cillian might have suddenly stopped answering his phone.

Leaning forward, he picked the phone back up and dialled another number. It rang twice and was picked up.

‘Hello?’

‘Billie,’ Connor said, clearing his throat and trying to make his voice sound more casual than he really felt, ‘is Cillian with you?’

There was a pause. ‘With me?’ He could understand the pause. He’d never had to ring her to ask before. ‘No, he went out early to the gym like always.’

‘And he ain’t come back to change or anything?’ Connor pushed.

‘No. He don’t always, if he has early stuff on. Why?’ she asked, her tone sharpening. ‘Is everything alright?’

Connor closed his eyes and suppressed a groan. ‘Yeah. Yeah, ’course. Bugger just ain’t replying to my texts. He’s probably busy. In fact he’s probably down the market, come to think of it, making an early start.’

‘Look, I gotta go, Bills – I’ll catch you later.’ Connor quickly ended the call and stood up. He needed to get dressed. It was barely eight in the morning and he was still in nothing but a pair of jogging bottoms.

On his way through to the bedroom he turned on the tracking app linked to Cillian’s chip. He held his breath for a moment as it searched the grids for him, then let out a small breath of relief as a small red dot appeared. But he frowned as he looked at the area. It was a long way outside of London and still seemed to be moving.

Quickly throwing on his clothes, Connor kept checking the dot every few seconds. As he laced his shoes, he tried to calm the racing thump inside his chest. They’d never been apart for long, he and Cillian. Not throughout their entire lives. They worked together, socialised together, plotted together, laughed together. They’d only lived apart for the last three years or so. Not knowing what was happening to him now, knowing that he was potentially in some very real danger, felt worse than anything he’d ever encountered.

He threw on a jacket and shoved his keys into his pocket after he locked the front door of his flat. Pausing by the lift for a moment, he decided to use the stairs. He didn’t want to lose signal on the app for even a second.

He ran down the stairs as fast as he could safely run, glancing down at the screen on each floor. So long as he could still see where Cillian was, he knew that things would be OK. All he needed to do was get to Ray
